Yagya (also known as Yajna or Havan) is an ancient Vedic fire ritual that has been followed for thousands of years. Nowadays, people listen to Yagya, but not many people know about how Yagya is actually performed and what the steps of significance are. According to Vedic tradition, Yagya is not only a ritual but also a disciplined spiritual process that supports the planetary balance, mental peace, and positive energy.
Sankalp is important before starting the Yagya, meaning intention. Sankalp means the purpose for which the Yagya is being done—health, career stability, mental peace, planetary remedies, or spiritual growth. According to Vedic astrology, a Yagya performed without a clear sankalp becomes merely a formal ritual, with limited effect.
Every Yagya is not for everyone. Which Yagya is suitable? It is decided based on the kundali (horoscope) analysis. Furthermore, selecting an auspicious time is also very important, as planetary alignment significantly influences the results of the Yagya. A Yagya performed at the right time is considered to be more effective.
Yagya is always performed in a clean, peaceful, and positive environment. The Yagya site is first purified—with Vedic mantras, water, and sacred materials. The Havan kund (fire pit) is prepared according to proper Vedic measurements, which symbolize stability and balance.
Before starting the Yagya, the priest performs achaman and purification, which purifies the body and mind. If Yagya is being done for another (in the case of online or remote), the participant’s name, gotra (lineage), and sankalpa (intention) are taken to establish a spiritual connection.
Fire, or Agni, in Vedic tradition it considered a divine messenger. Through Agni Sthapana, the sacred fire is established with the chanting of mantras. This fire acts as a conduit, carrying offerings and mantras to the universal energy. With this, the Yagya officially begins.
In this phases specific Vedic mantras are chanted, and ghee, herbals, grains, and the sacrificial material are offered into the fire. Every mantra and offering have their own energetic impact. According to Vedic science, these sound vibrations and combinations of fire are purify the environment and mind.
Throughout the entire Yagya, the entire intention (sankalp) plays the central role. Whether the person is not present physically. The Intention (sankalp) will connect their energy to the Yagya. The Yagya will end with Puranahuti. This is the final offering of representing gratitude and surrender. With this, the energy of the Yagya is considered completed and sealed.
After the Yagya (fire ritual), prayers are offered for peace, happiness, and prosperity. The sacred ash (vibhuti) from the Yagya is considered holy and is given as a blessing.
