Red Coral (Moonga) carries the bold, protective energy of Mangal—Mars.

Red coral is calcium carbonate (aragonite) secreted by Corallium rubrum and related species. In Sanskrit it is Pravala or Moonga, the ratna of Mangal—Mars, planet of energy, war, siblings, and property.
Quality coral shows uniform ox-blood or deep red colour, porcelain-like surface, and absence of cracks or resin fill. It is softer than most gems (3.5 Mohs) and must be protected from chemicals.
Mediterranean coral from Italy (Sardinia, Torre del Greco) is historically prized. Japanese and Taiwanese corals also enter the trade. Deep red ox-blood Italian coral commands premium prices.
Mars rules blood, muscles, courage, brothers, and landed assets. Afflicted Mars may respond to Moonga. Aries and Scorpio rashis, and Mrigashira, Chitra, and Dhanishta nakshatras, are linked to coral.
Unlike transparent gems, coral is opaque; Jyotish values rich colour and polish over clarity. Triangular and oval cabochons are common. Weight is often measured in rattis due to lower specific gravity.
