Garnets are nesosilicates with formula X₃Y₂(SiO₄)₃ — species include almandine, pyrope, spessartine, grossular, and andradite. Hessonite is grossular garnet; red garnets are often almandine-pyrope blends. Hardness 6.5–7.5.

In Jyotish, orange "cinnamon" grossular garnet functions as the closest upratna to Gomed for Rahu. Red garnet is sometimes linked to Mangal (Mars) in folk practice — chart-specific. Gemstone remedies are chart-specific. Always consult a qualified Jyotish astrologer before wearing any stone for planetary purposes.

Sri Lanka, India, Tanzania, and Madagascar are major sources. Tsavorite (green grossular) and rhodolite are jewellery favourites beyond remedial use.
